Switzerland Trip 2025 ✈ Part 4: Schilthorn

Continuing with our 'Making Memories with Moms' series since 2022, we are back with another trip with our moms this year. This time, our destination was Europe - Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. We kicked off our trip in Germany, and drove around the entire country in 10 days covering a total distance of 2856 kms (1775 miles), and continued our journey in Switzerland by trains. This was a hectic trip but we are so thankful for the opportunity to enjoy all the amazing places and sceneries with our moms, making memories that will last for a long time.

19 May 2025 (Mon): Grindelwald First - Schilthorn
We were supposed to visit Schilthorn on a different day but since it was forecasted to rain the next 3 days, we decided to squeeze it in today to take full advantage of the good weather.

After spending half the day at Grindelwald First, we left Grindelwald at 2.45pm and decided to make our way to Schilthorn while the weather was good. Our journey from Grindelwald to Schilthorn was like an amazing race as we were trying to make it to the last cable car for the day to Schilthorn.

We were really counting on the Swiss tranportation punctuality as this 2 hours journey involved bus #1 - train #1 - train #2 - bus #2 - cable car x3, with tight connections. The bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg was delayed by 3 min and we had to run into the cable car station as soon as we got off the bus at 3.50pm to make it on the last cable car at 3.51pm! Welcome to my travel bootcamp...lol!

This entire journey, including the Schilthorn cable car (which would have cost CHF54 for the return trip), was included in the Berner Oberland Pass.

Successfully made it on the 3.50pm cable way from Stechelberg - Murren - Birg - Schilthorn! We had to switch to 2 other cable cars at Murren and Birg before getting to Schilthorn, but once we made it on the one in Stechelberg, we were good.

The cable car from Stechelberg to Murren just opened in December 2024, and is the steepest cableway in the world.

It was a lil' annoying having to change cable car 3 times (and scan all our tickets 3 times) but certainly can't complain about the views. At least it wasn't crowded in the cable car.

Made it to Schilthorn at 4.20pm. Good thing about coming at the end of the day was having the entire observation deck to ourselves.

Panoramic view of the Swiss Alps from Schilthorn. So glad we made it here on a good weather day.

Schilthorn was the filming location for the James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

Spent about 25 min taking photos and headed back downhill to Murren at 4.45pm.

22 May 2025 (Thurs): Wilderswil - Schilthorn
It was a rainy day but we decided to brave the weather and revisit Schilthorn again as mom wanted to see snow.

Took a train to Lauterbrunnen at 12.15pm then switched to bus 141 to Stechelberg station.

The waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen valley were flowing more rapidly after the rain.

Boarded the Schilthorn cableway again. Most people wouldn't go up to Schilthorn in this weather because the visibility is 0 (as you can see in the middle right photo above) but since the Schilthorn cableway tickets are already included in the Berner Oberland Pass, it didn't cost us extra to revisit.

This was the main reason we came up here despite the low visibility. Mom had fun playing with snow in May.

Now this explains our decision of rushing to come here 2 days ago when the weather was good. Compare and contrast the photos when weather was good vs snow. We acknowledge that traveling requires a lot of luck, but planning ahead helps a lot.

We didn't have enough time to visit the James Bond Museum 2 days ago so we made up for it today.

Headed downhill at 3pm. It was pretty cool to ride the gondola through fog and snow.

Walked over to the waterfall next to the station to take some photos while waiting for the bus. It was snowing in the mountains and raining in the valley.

It was still raining so we took the bus to Lauterbrunnen then switched to the train back to Wilderswil.
