A Little Appreciation Goes A Long Way!!

Arghh...my blog is getting boring. Not a good sign coz that means I haven't been doing anything interesting lately. =.= My blog is a good reminder to keep my life interesting. I mentioned in my last post that we were finally done with our big project but right after a very short break, we had to crank up our engine again for another round roller-coaster. Initially I thought March wouldn't be as bad as February but it seems like I was even busier in March. I guess I'll still be sitting on this roller-coaster for the next 2 months. Hopefully I'll get a good break in June. =P

March 28 (Thurs): D-team dinner at Il Bacaro, Campbell House. This is our boss's favorite restaurant+hotel so it didn't surprise us that he chose this restaurant for our team appreciation dinner. =) I missed the dinner last year coz I was 'hiding out' in China this time last year. Ahh...how time flies huh!!

Yummylicious 6-course fine dine Venetian treat + good wine & champagne to wrap up a year of hard work. =)

A little appreciation goes a long way!! =)

All Work No Play February

It's now March already and it seems like the month of February just flew by in the blink of an eye!! The past few weeks have been all work and no play just to make sure that we complete all our work in time. After working on this project for 8 months and working consecutively for the past 21 days with no weekends, it's a wrap on Tuesday evening and we're finally DONE (for now)...pheww!!

Our peak started right after Chinese New Year and I haven't had time to update about CNY 2013 so here's a quick update. I had my ipad most of the time but somehow I took very very little photos this time. =P

Feb 9 (Sat): Reunion dinner with maternal relatives at Vistana Hotel.

Pictures pictures!! This year we're missing 2 cousins...both in Taiwan.

CNY = Lotsa gatheringssss

Honestly, I have absolutely no complaints about my job. Auditors are known to have no life but I'm fortunate that I'm still able to strike a good balance between work and life because of this job. Besides, working late for 3 weeks out of an entire year really ain't bad at all. This year's work load was slightly more than last year but having a good manager definitely made all the difference. How often do we get to work with managers who say 'thank you' every time we work late or over the weekends? This is something that we rarely see in an Asian working environment. A little appreciation definitely does go a long way. =) Good teammates, good managers, helpful clients, manageable work load...whatelse can I ask for...always reminding myself to count my blessings and never take anything for granted.

Good food to reward ourselves at our very own 'pantry'/ lunch room in the office. =P I even brought my cool mini-fridge to light up our weekends...haha!!

Finally received our own DVD!!! Thanks ICS for sending this to us all the way from Shanghai to Malaysia!! Too bad the box is damaged but luckily the discs are still fine.

Twincredibles on Alumni Newsletters

How have our lives changed after China Rush? Honestly, nothing have changed at all apart from having an amazing experience that we'll cherish for the rest of our lives. =P Some friends commented that we're now 'celebrities' but the fact is we're not even close to E-grade celebrity...lol!! We can still walk on the streets of Shanghai without being recognized at all. I guess that explains why there's still no news about the renewal of season 4. I would love to join the production crew if there's S4 though. =P

Anyway, I would like to thank World Learning and UAH Office of International Programs for giving me a space to share about our Amazing Race experience. I hope that by sharing our dream-come-true stories, we'll be able to inspire encourage more people to pursue their dreams and give it a chance to happen. No dreamer is ever too small, no dream is ever too big. =)

UGRAD Global Gazette (March 2013 Edition)

Food for thought: It seems like American institutions (alumni) are more interested to know and share about our non-academic experiences/achievements (eg. Charlie's Amazing Race experience was also featured on both Harvard Westlake & Harvard Crimson). On the other hand, local institutions seem to be only interested in academic achievements (eg. ACCA prize winners). =P

January Misc Updates

This time of the year is always the busy season for all auditors, but I'm pretty lucky that my busy season will only start after Chinese New Year. =) #countmyblessings So before I get caught up with work, here's a quick 'miscellaneous' update simply coz I've nothing else to blog about...hahaha!! =P

I don't think I've mentioned anything about my photobooks before. It's pretty obvious from my blog that I enjoy working on photos/collage and since we hardly develop photos anymore these days, photobook is now a great alternative for old-school photo albums. As for me, I used photobook to export my blog. That means putting my Ctrl-C & Ctrl-V skills to good use and basically rearranging all my blog contents into a book. =) Most people will find this boring but I actually enjoy it, I guess that's my 'artistic' trait for being a lefty. =P

So far I've completed 6 photobooks - 2 for my Europe trip, 1 for Amazing Race photos, and 3 to document our journey on the Amazing Race China Rush.

I just started watching Running Man recently (even though it's been airing for more than 2 years) and now I'm hooked to it...lol!! It's my daily dose of laughter...yes I'm like a crazy person laughing out alone in front of my laptop every evening...lol!! My friend pointed out that I seem to enjoy shows that involve people running around...that's quite true...hahaha!!

Apart from the fact that it's funny, I also enjoy watching the show coz I can kinda relate to it. Cameras + running around + completing tasks...sounds like Amazing Race huh...hehe!! Reminiscing the days of having a camera in front of us all the time. =)

Tomorrow will be Chinese New Year eve but CNY came a week earlier for me. Had reunion dinner with dad's sisters at Chong Tian Heritage Hotel last weekend. =)

Lou Sang with Dell team colleagues before we all go off for our short CNY holidays. =)

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!

It's been quite some time since China Rush 3 finished airing, but I've just managed to sort out all the snapshots of comments about us. This post is a lil' late but it's never too late to say a big thank you to all the fans who have followed and supported the show. Be it positive or negative comments, it's great to see that there are people who are willing to spend time to share their opinions about the race and the casts. Even though we didn't win, we're absolutely blessed to know that there are people out there who liked us and thankful for all the love and support that we've received. These people might not know that we're actually reading (stalking) all these on weibo and forums but we really do appreciate all the comments...a little compliment definitely goes a long way. =) P.S. This is yet another long post, sorry for the lousy image quality. Scroll to the end to read comments from our 'die-hard-fan' and Sheng's fans . =P

2013 Winter in Beijing

If you ask if I have any New Year's resolution, my answer is 'nope'...but I do have a travel resolution for 2013 instead. =P Thanks to the 2-year China visa that I made for China Rush, 2013 will be my cuti-cuti-China year...hahaha! =) Besides, Airasia definitely helped out with my travel plans by launching more China routes last year.

I was fortunate to kick-start 2013 with yet another 'China rush' adventure. We were supposed to make a trip to Beijing from Shanghai after being eliminated from the race last April but we dumbly went to the wrong train station and missed the last train so that was an epic fail and we didn't make it to Beijing. This time I was determined to rectify that failure...lol!! =P

In fact, this trip to Beijing was quite a last minute decision and I only had 10 days to plan for it. The main thing that was holding me back from traveling to Beijing at this time of the year was the freezing cold weather but after much consideration, I decided to just go for it. Well, how often do I get to travel to such cold places. Besides, life's meant to be an adventure isn't it? =P I was hoping to see snow but unfortunately, it was just freaking cold  (between -8°C and -14°C) all the time and didn't snow at all for the 3 days I was there. =.=

My original plan was a solo trip until bro suddenly decided to tag along the day before departure. He frantically packed his stuffs within an hour and booked his flight tickets just one day before traveling...literally 'china rush'...lol!! My goal for this trip was to cover all the main attractions in Beijing and I'm proud to say mission accomplished! P.S. Long post ahead as I'm gonna include some travel details here (just in case anyone's interested to read).

1 Jan 2013 (Tues): Penang - KL - Beijing

Traveling with our Amazing Race backpacks again and reminiscing the race days. =) Dressed comfortably for our overnight flight from Penang to Beijing but we looked like we're endorsing Adidas...hahaha!!

2 Jan 2013 (Wed): Summer Palace (颐和园), Tiananmen (天安门), Wangfujing (王府井)

Arrived Beijing Capital International Airport early in the morning and we could feel the chill the moment we stepped out of the plane. Traveled from 26°C to -10°C within 5 hours!! After freshening up and layering ourselves up in the airport lavatory, we took the airport express into the city. The train ride from airport to Dongzhimen station took about 45 minutes and cost RMB25...not bad huh! =)

Getting ready to brave the cold before getting out of the subway station!! Bro looked pretty ridiculous...lol!!

Our main mode of transportation was the subway...very convenient and it cost only RMB2 per trip no matter how far you travel...so cheap!! The Beijing Transportation Smart Card that we got made it so much easier to travel everywhere. Subways in Beijing are always packed but bro's sleeping skill is unbeatable...he can sleep anytime, anywhere...lol!!

First stop: Summer Palace...used to be the summer resort for the emperor. We got off the subway at Beigongmen station and entered through the North Palace Gate. After paying the entrance fee of RMB20/pax (student price not applicable for foreign students), we were welcomed by this frozen Suzhou River and frozen boats. Welcome to winterland!!!

Walked through Longevity Hill to Kunming Lake. The entire lake was frozen and it looked like a skating rink...so cool!! Pardon me for my sam-pat-ness...we don't ever see this Malaysia lah. =P We found out that a massive stage was set-up on the frozen lake for the New Year's countdown...pretty cool huh!!

Long Corridor

Another interesting fact - the entire lake covering 2.2 square kilometres was entirely man made and the excavated soil was used to build the Longevity Hill (the hill you see at the top right corner of the pictures).

The most interesting part of the Summer Palace for me is the frozen lake...lol!! Obviously nobody cares about the sign 'Don't Step On The Ice' coz everyone was walking on the ice...hahaha!! It was fun skate-walking on the ice but it was coldddd!!

Busy snapping pictures as we walked across the lake. Taking our gloves on and off to take pictures was extremely troublesome but we had no choice coz touch screen doesn't work with gloves!! =.=

My signature jump shot on the ice. =)

By the time we reached the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, the only thing we wanted to do was to get into the subway coz we were all freezing our butts off!!

Sunset at Tiananmen Square. We got there just in time for the flag-lowering ceremony.

Went to this famous Peking Roast Duck restaurant, Quanjude (全聚德), at Wangfujing for dinner. It's ranked #1 among all Peking duck restaurants in Beijing according to this website but I personally think it's kinda pricey. Oh well, we've come all the way to Beijing so of course we've gotta try it at it's place of origin!! =P

Felt so good to finally get back to our hotel, Days Inn Forbidden City, after being out in the cold all day. The freezing weather made me doubt my ability to cover all the places that I've included in my itinerary coz it was really tiring to walk around when the temperature is -10°C!!

3 Jan 2013 (Thurs): Tiananmen (天安门), Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城), Temple of Heaven (天坛), Olympic Park (北京奧林匹克公园)

One thing good about our hotel is that it was within walking distance to Tiananmen and Wangfujing. Even though we saw the flag-lowering the day before, we still wanted to see the flag-raising ceremony the next morning at 7.36am...but but but...-14°C?!?!!!

Guess what...even though our hotel was just 10 minutes walk from Tiananmen, we left our hotel late so we had to run all the way and barely made it for the flag-raising ceremony...lol!! There were already quite a lot of people there so we could only watch from far. What a good warm-up to be running so early in the cold...brrr!! =.=

Made our own way to Mutianyu Great Wall by public transportation. Took the subway from Tiananmen to Dongzhimen then walked to Dongzhimen bus terminal to board bus no. 916快 (express line) to Huairou. We boarded the bus at about 8am and arrived at Huairou Bei Dajie around 9am, pleasant bus ride and best of all it cost us only RMB4.40 (discount with the subway card) for the 1 hour journey. =)

After getting off the bus, we then hired a mini-bus to Mutianyu. We paid the driver RMB75/way for the 30-minute journey. We could have negotiated even lower but the driver was quite nice so we didn't mind paying him a lil' more.

Mutianyu Great Wall!! We were there quite early so there weren't many people there yet. One of the reasons why I chose to go to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall instead of Badaling was to avoid the tour groups. =P Besides, there are fewer tourists during winter season especially January coz it's the coldest month. We got our admission ticket for RMB25 (student price) and RMB80 for a round trip cable car.

There were hardly any other people around so we didn't have to wait at all to get on the cable car. =) I was hoping to see more snowy scenery but it wasn't snowing for the past few days so the scenery was only a lil' white...but it would have been hard to hike if it was snowing. We were pretty lucky that it was a sunny day with blue skies and we were there before the smog crisis hit Beijing last week.

In awe of the scenery as the cable car brought us to higher grounds.

Getting ready to scale the Great Wall!!

Breath-takingly beautiful scenery of the wall and the mountains.

Took some 'lubang' pics from one of the many watch towers.

Notice the icy pathway? It would have been dangerous and impossible to hike if they hadn't cleared that narrow path for visitors. We pretty much had the whole 'wall' for ourselves...good to get there early. =)

We were really lucky coz it was such a clear day and the sun kinda warmed us up a lil'. I was so worried that it would be too cold so I had 8 layers of clothes on me (nope I didn't get fatter)...lol!!

We stopped to take pictures almost every 5 steps...hahaha!!

We kept walking and walking until we came to this "No Climbing" sign. They didn't clear the pathways from that point onward so it was slippery and dangerous to walk on the ice. The Wall looks pretty much the same everywhere so I decided not to hike further but bro insisted that he wanted to go further and higher.

So I took over his backpack, gave him 30 minutes, and he started sliding along the icy pathways while I waited at the watch tower and continue taking more pics.

Spotting the light blue jacket as he ran up the slopes.

These was taken by bro as he scaled up the steeper steps. Magnificent view of the Great Wall from high up!!

Woohoo...jumping across the Great Wall!!!!!

For the first time ever...gif of my jumpshots...lol!! Guess how many times I jumped just to get the 2 best shots above???? 40 freakin' times!!! Bro you cacat-ed my legs again!! =.=

Bro's versions of jump shots.

We were like 2 siao-kias jumping like crazy at the Great Wall...lol!!

Enough of jump shots. Last few pics before making our way down by cable car at 12pm.

It was good that our driver requested us to get back in 2 hours or else we'll probably be stuck up there taking pics forever...lol!! =P

It was only about 2pm by the time we got back into the city so we decided to visit the Temple of Heaven.

What a small world and coincidence to meet up with China Rush 3 cameraman, Lou & editor,Dingding at Tiantan! We were buying tickets and they spotted our blue jackets from the back...lol!! If we were to be 10 seconds earlier or later, we would have missed each other...life is mysterious and has its own ways. =) It was good to see 'em again after the race ended and toured Tiantan together.

We bought the combination ticket for RMB30 and visited the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, The Circular Mound Altar, and Echo Wall.

Last stop for the day - Bird's Nest & The Cube at Olympic Park. This was just a quick pit stop coz the cold was unbearable!

This was what happened at the end of the day...exhausted to the max! And when all we wanted to do was to lay on the bed and rest, we still had to take off the many layers of clothes first! =.=

4 Jan 2013 (Fri): Tiananmen Square (天安门), Forbidden City (故宫), Silk Market (秀水街)

Once again, we were here for the 3rd consecutive day...lol!!

Finally a pic of me in Tiananmen Square and right in front of Mao Zedong's portrait. =P Typical tourist...lol!!

Personally, I thought Forbidden City wasn't very interesting. We also bumped into a North Korean tour group and the ladies were all in beautiful dresses. It wasn't fun walking through the 'city' from South to North coz my leg was aching from over-jumping the day before, it was freakin' cold, and there weren't much to see. =.=

Panorama from our Beijing trip. That's all for our sightseeing in Beijing. I had to drop by Dell Beijing office in the afternoon to run some errands. We then went to the Silk Market and I got myself a cover for my new Ipad and a tea tumbler.

Chinese fast food for most of our meals. =P

We changed to another hotel (Beijing Century HongKong Hotel) near the airport on our last night in Beijing coz I had an early flight to catch the next morning. The hotel was decent and best of all they had free shuttle to and fro the airport. =)

5 Jan 2013 (Sat): Beijing - Shanghai

Took the 6.40am Spring Airlines flight from Beijing to Shanghai while bro flew back to KL. The ticket was pretty cheap and costed RMB400, even cheaper than taking the train. =) Thanks to YenShin for introducing me this airline and LeiSheng for helping me to purchase the airticket (the website does't accept foreign credit cards).

Back again to the awesome Renaissance Zhongshan Park hotel after a year. Spent the entire afternoon being post-woman filling up the courier forms in my hotel room. =P

Met up with China Rush friends (Jenn, Henry, Brandon, Lou, and Dingding) for dinner at Sichuan Citizen. =) Jenn then invited me to her European friend's house for Three King's Day party.

6 Jan 2013 (Sun): Stockcount in Songjiang, Orchestra+Ballet Performance

Went to Songjiang for work (stockcount) during the day. Henry had an extra ticket for an orchestra performance at the Mercedes Benz Arena so I got to tag along with Jenn and Winnie to watch the performance.

7 Jan 2013 (Mon): Shanghai - KL - Penang

Time to head home and get back to work. Absolutely blessed to start off the year with a wonderful trip. =)
